4 Reasons not to DIY your logo

Writer's picture: Xavier CarpioXavier Carpio

So you have a business and you need a logo. Sure it may seem easy to do, look at Nike its just a fancy checkmark anyone can do that! WRONG. Creating a logo is not as easy as it seems. there is a lot of thought and cycling through ideas to get to where it needs to be. People stay up for days brainstorming ideas and collaborating their thoughts. You cannot teach creativity to someone who does not have it. You can only guide and mentor it. You either got it or you don't. Here are some reasons to consider hiring a professional to do your logo if you are truly serious about growing your business.

1. Versatility.

So you have a great logo and you want to start making your online footprint. Your logo is a drawing of a guy with a leather jacket with tattoos and has smoke coming under him. Underneath you have a crazy graffiti font saying "Moe's Tattoos". It looks great across the street on your billboard sign and people can see it far away. What happens when you try to take a detailed logo like that and throw it online? Well for one, it is going to be very tiny compared to that billboard. So tiny in fact you won't be able to read the text at the bottom. Logos are meant to be versatile with all platforms. Start thinking of symbols and icons that can represent you when your main logo cannot work. Simplify as much as possible without getting rid of value.

2. Colors.

Certain colors bring out certain emotions. There's a reason why the term "Holiday Blue's" means sad. The color blue can be used to describe a person being sad...sometimes. On the other hand, it can be seen as refreshing, like the open sky. It all depends on who your target audience is and how all the elements play out together. Logos represent your brand and color is one of the most important things in creating a logo. It is what the eye sees first.

3. Target Audience.

Logos are meant to target certain people and that depends on what your brand stands for. There are certain colors and graphics that work well with specific people. We know you want your logo to look "cool" and be different than the rest. If all you are interested in for your logo to look cool, then you will never market towards the right people.

4. Research.

This is a big one. A lot of research goes into logo making. You need to know your playing field and who is doing what out there. Who is making it work and who is failing. Learn from others and absorb lessons. The more you know about what the world likes and dislikes, the more successful you will become because you will always be relevant.
