People tell me that I have a very clean and modern type of style. Personally, I just try to work at things with an open mind and try to think outside the box but make them fit in their own special way. I have always liked playing around with text and making them fit like puzzles on a background. I don’t get crazy and break all the rules just because. I only break them for certain things that I think have a meaning.
I get inspiration from all sorts of places. There is not a specific thing that influenced me to become a Graphic Designer. Like most artists, I started drawing at a young age. My work experience roughly started around the age of 8. It is hard to put an exact date in which I actually started working because I grew up in two family-owned businesses located in Washington State. We had a fast-food restaurant and a retail store in a mall-like environment. I would run back and forth between the shops and helped out with whatever I could. I started designing menus and posters for our businesses when I was around 13. I loved what I was doing and wanted to learn more. I have always been a hard worker and applied my best to everything I push out. Being a hard worker has prepared me for life as a designer.
I pull inspiration from modern designers and designers from the past mostly. I like to keep my layouts clean for a fresh approach. Saul Bass and his motion graphics influence me with his art from the 20th century. He changed the game for designers and he was one of the best. Another designer named Paul Rand has been a big influence on me and my art. He was a modernist master and his layouts were unique and he is still an influential artist to me. I prefer darker backgrounds with crisp san serif text. My favorite combination of colors is orange and black, to me it is masculine and modern. I try to have a diverse style.
I traveled to Tennessee and studied at the Art Institute of Nashville. There I built the foundation of my graphic design education. There I met a lot of great artists and teachers. My teachers taught me a lot about the world of graphic design. They taught me to not overuse drop shadows, don’t outline text and all kinds of tips. I made lots of great friends at Ai, and then when the school shut down, I transferred to Nossi.
At Nossi I met new designers and teachers. I’m getting ready to graduate and I am constantly improving my portfolio. With my portfolio, I’d like to specialize in logos and branding. I love building and designing for new brands and working closely with people in Nashville. My teachers have pushed me to become a better designer and he inspired me to specialize in branding and logos. I want to expand my portfolio in hopes of new opportunities.
